What is a Neuorma?

A neuroma, often referred to as Morton’s neuroma, is a painful condition that affects the ball of the foot, typically between the third and fourth toes. It occurs when the tissue surrounding a nerve thickens due to irritation or compression, leading to discomfort, tingling, or a burning sensation. While a neuroma is not a tumor, it can cause significant pain and interfere with daily activities if left untreated.

What Causes Neuromas?

Neuromas develop due to repeated pressure or irritation on the nerves in the foot. Common causes include:

  • Tight or High-Heeled Shoes – Footwear that squeezes the toes together can compress the nerves.

  • High-Impact Activities – Running, jumping, or sports that involve repetitive stress on the forefoot.

  • Foot Deformities – Conditions like bunions, hammertoes, or flat feet can increase the risk.

  • Trauma or Injury – Previous injuries to the foot can lead to nerve irritation and thickening.

Symptoms of a Neuroma

Individuals with a neuroma may experience:

  • A burning pain or tingling sensation in the ball of the foot

  • Numbness or a feeling of "pins and needles" in the toes

  • A sensation of a lump or something stuck inside the shoe

  • Worsening pain when walking, standing, or wearing tight shoes

Prevention & Treatment

To prevent neuromas, consider the following foot care tips:

  • Wear Proper Footwear – Choose shoes with a wide toe box and good arch support.

  • Use Orthotics or Padding – Inserts can help distribute pressure and relieve nerve irritation.

  • Take Breaks from High-Impact Activities – Resting your feet can prevent excessive strain.

  • Avoid Prolonged Pressure on the Forefoot – Change footwear and avoid tight or narrow shoes.

Treatment options for neuromas include:

  • Padding & Shoe Modifications – To reduce pressure on the affected nerve.

  • Anti-Inflammatory Medications – To relieve pain and swelling.

  • Corticosteroid Injections – To reduce inflammation around the nerve.

  • Physical Therapy & Massage – To help alleviate discomfort and improve foot function.

  • Surgical Intervention – In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the thickened nerve tissue.
